Ultra Contrast

One of my favorite designers, David Hicks, often created exciting contrasts by placing, say, a cutting edge space age plastic and leather Joe Colombo “Elda” chair within an otherwise Edwardian period room.

I often work with this idea in my own interiors, and really love the wonderful “tension” created through mixing seemingly disparate pieces together. In the super chic Galerie Van den Akker I happened upon this outrageous citron yellow “Boomerang” desk by the French sculptor Maurice Caulka for Leleu-Deshays. This is exactly the kind of sculptural modernist furniture that David Hicks loved to use, and I’m having the most fun here visualizing a room utilizing this pop piece. – Chocolate brown covered velvet walls, a David Hicks black, beige and white hexagon carpet, ivory and brown upholstery, a mix of fine antiques, and some good modern art – voila! – a room that is dramatic, warm, comfortable and inviting.

With my mind running quite wild thinking of all the possibilities for this really exceptional piece, I’m sporting a shocking pink cotton shirt with contrast white collar and French cuffs by Turnbull and Asser, Seaman Schepps black pearl cufflinks, vintage Cartier tank watch from Raj Tolaram, black and white silk/cotton mini houndstooth check pant by Gucci, black patent leather belt with silver leather trim and grommets and black, white and silver leather loafers both by Gucci.

James, the color is extravagant. Working would be so much more fun if I had that yellow desk in my office.
