My friend Rose Callahan (see her blog, The Dandy Portraits: The Lives of Exquisite Gentlemen Today) is working on the most marvelous book of photographs (with text by Nathaniel Adams) capturing modern day dandies, and I was quite thrilled to be asked to take part! The release is slated for the fall of this year via Gestalten Press, but thought to include this photo (above) as a little teaser!

For our shoot, Callahan envisioned a retro-glam Hollywood scenario at the recently refurbished Waldorf Astoria Hotel here in New York City. In planning a wardrobe befitting such opulent surrounds, my thoughts immediately turned to the evening sets from our friends at M. de Phocas. After a quick consultation with them, they graciously offered the pictured marvelous mix of diamonds, sapphires and onyx—the most perfect compliment to my black silk moire Tom Ford era Gucci dinner jacket. I matched this with a lavender Tom Ford tuxedo shirt, Charvet mauve silk bow tie, and a Turnbull and Asser black and white silk scarf. A splash of Creed Millesime Imperial topped things off.

Dinner at the Hearst Designer Visions Show House

As if a private tour of the Hearst Designer Visions Show House weren’t enough! When I was invited to a progressive dinner party there, and served by my friend Chef Alex Hitz, author of My Beverly Hills Kitchen, I had no problem finessing my chaotic (yet rather fabulous) schedule to make room on my calender to attend. The evening promised to be the perfect confluence of my many passions—and it offered a superb opportunity to spend more time enjoying Matthew Patrick Smyth, Antony Todd and David Rockwell’s interiors, and especially to share the show house with my beloved Scott McBee (storyboarding artist and Yacht portraitist) in tow! We also had the opportunity to chat with the brilliant Newell Turner and to catch up with our friends from Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Veranda magazines as well.

The evening commenced with several of Hitz’s signature hors d’oeuvres—gourgeres, marinated shrimp, “Mary’s Chicken Liver Pâté,” and “Michael Guerard’s Onion Cassis Confiture.” David Rockwell’s richly textured space for House Beautiful served as the perfect backdrop for the first course of French scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. We moved on to Antony Todd’s wonderfully dramatic environment created for Veranda. There we were treated to the main course of chicken curry, lemon rice, a spinach, red onion and blue cheese salad with a red wine vinaigrette and a marvelous mushroom tart.

We topped the evening off with desert in Matthew Patrick Smyth’s magnificent space created for Elle Decor—There we were treated to Hitz’s scrumptious coconut pudding with caramel sauce, pecan short bread cookies, almond raspberry white chocolate bars, as well as chocolate confections by Jacques Torres.

Needless to say it was quite satisfying to get a true-life sampling of many of the highlights from Hitz and his sensational My Beverly Hills Kitchen cook book. Do see his monthly feature, Alex’s Kitchen, in House Beautiful—reason enough to subscribe to House Beautiful!

Designer Visions Show House

Just back from a private tour of the Hearst Design Group’s Designer Visions Show House (250 West Street), and I’m feeling invigorated by the fabulousness of it all! In their refreshing take on the show-house tradition, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Veranda Magazine present three distinct points of view, integrating all in a terrific Tribeca waterfront warehouse setting:

Elle Decor had the super stylish Matthew Patrick Smyth design their space—a “modern day Grand Tour…for a globe trotting gay male couple who would prefer to be in Bali…” Overtly telling a gay story line? Well done! I’m photographed (top) in Smyth’s rather fabulous dining room, which has us nostalgic for our recent Moroccan expedition. Smyth’s use of Schumacher’s Byzantine collection is highly effective in this challenging space. I’ve been wanting to use this wallpaper myself, and I have to say I’m quite inspired to do so now!

Veranda had their space decorated by Antony Todd in his signature take on global chic—a marvelous mix of styles and periods…fresh and relaxed, with just the right amount of drama.

House Beautiful’s apartment by David Rockwell was designed as an “…urban abode” for a pair of global nomads—filled with warm rich textures, the space represents the meshing of diverse cultural backgrounds. More on this in our next post!

I’m photographed (top) in Matthew Patrick Smyth’s Moorish inspired Elle Decor dining room, sporting a Gucci bottle green leather jacket, gray, blue and green check wool pant and navy slip on loafers, Tom Ford pale blue cotton shirt with contrast white collar and charcoal wool knit tie, pearl and pale blue sapphire cufflinks, vintage Rolex watch, Ralph Lauren black alligator belt with sterling buckle and my fragrance is Creed Royal-Oud.
