Inside Tangier: Houses & Gardens

The release of my brilliant friend Nicolò Castellini Baldissera’s tremendous tome, Inside Tangier: Houses & Gardens, could not have been timed more perfectly. As you know, McBee and I have just gotten back from a most terrific holiday in Tangier, and I’m happy to see that our posts and Instagram images have been creating some buzz and excitement about this enchanted place. Now that we’ve perhaps wet your appetite, we beseech you to sink your teeth into Baldissera’s new book! We’ve included some of Guido Taroni’s spectacular photos below. You’ll find many many more when you add this sumptuous book to your library!

We’ve mentioned here on WIJW that much of the real splendor of Tangier exists behind closed doors – hidden to all but those who reside there and a rather select inner circle – so we consider ourselves extremely blessed to have exquisite friends like Monica di Valmarana and her husband Richard Conahay who have helped to open many of those doors for us. Now, thanks to the efforts of the super chic and multi-talented Nicolo Castellini Baldissera and the superb photographer, Guido Taroni, everyone can tour some of the most glorious, exclusive, and dreamy Tangier homes. The book is absolutely stunning. Click here to pick up your copy of Inside Tangier: Houses & Gardens. It’s a must have!

Arriving at Villa Josephine, I’m sporting an Orlebar Brown Bond 007 sage linen safari jacket, linen voile shirt from De Valsco, Ralph Lauren Purple Label white cotton cargo pants, Tom Ford Wilton chain loafers in zebra, Hermes Cape Cod Deux Zones watch, Lock & Co, Tuscany fedora and my fragrance is Mandini Tangier Gardenia.

After our last superb stay at Villa Josephine we simply had to return! We had a fairly full trip schedule this time around, so it was a welcome place to decompress. In fact we didn’t leave its glorious grounds for three whole days!

We had breakfast, lunch and all but one dinner served on the tremendous terraces – and even managed to have a few friends there for cocktail hour. Villa Josephine felt like our own home in Tangier. One night, we treated ourselves to dinner in the divine dining room – with after dinner drinks al fresco under the stars to bask in the beauty of the place.

The place has a flavor of the French Riviera with an African twist – Villa Josephine really is unique amongst Morocco’s maison d’hôtes. There is no other place like it in Tangier. Now with Jasper Conran opening Villa Mabrouka (the former home of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge), there might be some competition! We’ll be sure to try it on our next visit to Tangier, but suffice it to say, Villa Josephine will always be very special to us and we look forward to many more visits.

A farewell-to-Tangier stroll in the glorious gardens of Villa Josephine. I’m wearing a Tom Ford Ivory silk Spencer jacket, white cotton French cuff shirt, linen, silk floral pants, persimmon velvet ikat slippers, Hermes coral silk pocket square, Cape Cod Deux Zones watch, Seaman Schepps cufflinks in shell with coral beads, and my fragrance is Madini Tangier Gardenia.

On our way home, we had one final night in Morocco – we took the high speed train to Casablanca to catch a direct flight to New York the next day – we arrived in time to pay homage to design legend Bill Wills at Rick’s Cafe – one of his last projects and certainly one of the best meals we had.

At Villa Mimi Calpe. I’m sporting a sage green linen Bond 007 safari jacket, Tom Ford silk linen floral pants, persimmon ikat velvet slippers, white linen shirt by Oxmal, Hermes Cape Cod Deux Zones watch, and my fragrance is Madini Gardenia

As you may have gathered, we’ve fallen under Tangier’s spell with all of its hidden charms. We’d been missing our fab collection of friends there and also were desperate for a proper end-of-summer holiday. Some long languid days lounging by the pool or beachside was just what the doctor ordered.

The Minzah was an absolute disaster – its refurbishment a la gout Saddam Hussein was something we could not bear again. Our friends had suggested the rather charming Villa Mimi Calpe and we are thrilled they did! It is more like staying at someone’s private villa than a hotel. Its lush and overflowing gardens provide a beautiful bastions to relax in. One could easily forget that one was right in the middle of Tangier, and they have the most helpful staff to cater to one’s every whim. The place really is so ravishingly romantic.

Villa Mimi Calpe provided the perfect base of operations for us. We arrived just in time for all the best cocktail and dinner parties and immediately we embarked on a whirlwind of social visits – what great fun it was to see everyone and their beautiful homes and gardens once again – and to discover a few new ones as well!

Our exquisite friends, Monica di Valmarana and her husband Richard Conahay, made our stay most sublime, with days at the beach, lounging poolside at their home, Dar Chal. We also had the honor to attend a benefit for the Friends of Rohuna at the glorious home and gardens of Umberto Pasti  – and we had gorgeous dinners and lunches, sharing all the splendid facets of Tangier.
