NEST FRAGRANCES

During a meeting with Howard Slatkin at his home to discuss his superb recent book, Fifth Avenue Style: A Designer’s New York Apartment, we couldn’t help but inquire about the most exquisite scented candles that greeted us there.

A visit to Howard Slatkin’s home is an unforgettable thing — all of one’s senses are engaged immediately upon entering the elevator vestibule!

Enter Nest Fragrances. Slatkin, who is really the ultimate in design couturiers, tells us that he used to actually go so far as to create home fragrances for his clients –this was at a time when the only decent alternatives around were scented candles by Rigaud. If there happened to be a surplus of his bespoke creations during a project (and if a client didn’t mind) he’d offer them at his NYC atelier/boutique, Slatkin & Co. As the story goes, one day a former Saks Fifth Avenue president (Rose Marie Bravo) was shopping at Slatkin & Co and realized that there was a huge void in home fragrances. She wanted several thousand of Slatkin’s olfactory confections!

Slatkin had his hands full with projects of his own, and knew that this would be a massive undertaking. Thankfully for all of us, his brother Harry and sister in law, Laura (who had recently left Bear Stearns) took on the daunting project, and with their combined business savvy, turned Slatkin & Co into the it candle and fragrance company, which (not surprisingly) was subsequently snapped up by The Limited Group. The Slatkins, however, held on to the private label business and formed Nest. Laura Slatkin — who just gets everything right — propelled the company to become what is now one of the most iconic fragrance companies of our time. Needless to say, there is a whole lot of chic amongst the Slatkin clan!

I personally love mixing these fragrances to create my own blend. I love Bamboo mixed with Grapefruit, Orange Blossom, lemon grass and ginger or Sicilian Tangerine for instance. I love moss and mint and wasabi pear for the bedroom. During autumn and winter I switch to Moroccan Amber and Birchwood Pine. I’m wild about White Narcisse which combines so many of my favorites scents – French mimosa, dewy muguet and creamy sandalwood — it contains natural jasmine absolute, natural mimosa absolute and natural narcissus extract.

Do peruse their site and treat yourselves to a few of these most sublime scents.
