I was absolutely thrilled to see the most fabulous exhibition entitled The World of Gloria Vanderbilt at 1st Dibs Gallery in NYC. Always on the hunt for just the right pictures and paintings for my clients, the event provided me with the most perfect opportunity to blend vocation with vacation, which is always a welcome thing!

Heiress, designer, painter, model, actor, socialite and icon, Gloria Vanderbilt was quite the renaissance woman. She had seemingly boundless energy and certainly was not afraid to explore her many diverse passions! In short, she dreamed…and her great lust for life found the most delicious expression in her creative work.

Needless to say, she has been hugely inspirational to many, including your’s truly.

In her words, “often my images are channeled in dreams which find expression in my paintings…. Memory is also a driving influence, memories I absorb and reinvent to changing effect because I have changed but do not want to let them go. Color too intoxicates, inspires, so does the beauty of a person, who has something I can’t quite catch. They become muses which I become obsessed to define, reveal something of their mystery.” – excerpt from the Gloria Vanderbilt website.

I’ve included here just a few images to provide a bit of a tease as I’m sure you’ll be heading to 1st DIbs to see this glorious exhibition first hand! I was quite taken with Vanderbilt’s self portraits as well as of Truman Capote (below).

I might also recommend Wendy Goodman’s rather marvelous book, “The World of Gloria Vanderbilt” for a more in-depth look at this iconic woman’s fascinating life. See this link.

For a super casual day I am sporting Ralph Lauren cream cotton cable knit sweater with shawl collar, Alexander McQueen pink and white cotton mini stripe shirt with pink gross grain ribbon trim, Uniqlo white jeans, Gucci python belt with silver buckle and aviator sun glasses, Lanvin sneakers, vintage Rolex watch and my fragrance is Eau d’Italie’s Paestum Rose.

  3. You look good in gallery white, with whispers of other colors you “cannot quite catch”…loved seeing a bit of your world along with Gloria’s.

  4. James Andrew says:

    Dear Philip,

I do so enjoy your beautifully worded comments and feed back.

I feel so honored that a man with such a highly evolved aesthetic as yours appreciates what I am sharing here on WIJW?
