WHAT IS JAMES WEARING? Rotating Header Image

Doris Leslie Blau

It used to be that the decoration of a room would begin with the selection of a sensational carpet – sadly this time honored tradition has gone by the wayside, and I might add, with pretty disastrous results. Typically a carpet is one of the most expensive acquisitions, so it makes sense to select the carpet first and then match one’s fabrics and furnishings.

Let’s get back to basics and start from the ground up!

Certainly one of my favorite places to go for the most spectacular carpets has been the Doris Leslie Blau gallery founded by the legendary Doris Blau, whose discerning eye and taste for slightly unconventional pieces has made the DLB gallery a prime destination and invaluable resource for those in the know for 45 years!

On a recent visit I was immediately enthralled by this 1920’s French Aubusson Carpet – a masterful commingling of exotic 17th century Turkish influence and refined French sophistication created on a colossal 18.6 x 17.10 scale! Its beauty is such that I was thrilled but not terribly surprised to learn that it once graced the floor of the Chateau de Groussay in an interior by the legendary decorator Emilio Terry created for iconic taste maker Charles de Bestigui. You may remember my mention of this hallowed ground as one of my favorite Chateau’s of all time in an earlier post? Needless to say this little bit of provenance, added to my already deep initial attraction to the piece, has me quite excited about bringing it to our lovely readership here at WIJW.

Contemplating all the wondrous potential of this glorious carpet, I’m wearing a Gucci white and black perforated leather jacket with saddle leather trim, Tom Ford white and black cotton stripe shirt with french cuffs, Seaman Schepps black pearl cufflinks, shocking pink jean cut pants by Dior, Gucci python belt with silver double horsehead buckle and saddle leather tasseled loafers.

James, Yes, Emilio and Carlos were so great. I adore the carpet. I was mentioned in Architectural Digest saying how much I admired Groussay. It is very iconic for us, and how fitting that you should discover an actual piece from the fabled residence. I am not surprised, only deeply impressed. Dean Farris
