Always on the prowl for the best art for my clients (and having a lifelong interest myself) I’m always thrilled to make studio visits. We recently spent some time with my exquisite friend, Alexis Zambrano to get a preview of the works going into an upcoming solo exhibition entitled, Interior Artscapes.

Zambrano, as you might recall, co-founded M. de Phocas, the glorious line of men’s accessories that we’ve often featured on WIJW. As a young boy growing up in the cosmopolitan Monterrey Mexico, Zambrano developed an intense interested in both collecting and making art. By the age of twelve, he was apprenticing with the likes of artists Aldo Chaparro, Juan Torres, and Ximena Subercasaux. He went on to earn his BFA in architectural design from the esteemed Parsons The New School for Design here in NYC. Soon after, he co-found the mens’ accessories line, M. de Phocas, applying his considerable skills toward designing men’s jewelry, but he has always kept his hand in the fine arts as well, which brings us to his fabulous artwork. Here Zambrano’s palette is in fact a collection of all that he loves — a catalog of carefully curated imagery gleaned from auction and antiques catalogs that he reinterprets in an array of materials. There’s a wonderful reciprocity of disciplines in his work, with contrasts of scale and image that hearken back to the Surrealists’ pioneering experiments in collage, and later in the modernist collage aesthetic as seen in the works of artists like Rosenquist and Salle. Each of Zambrano’s works is a gem — a shrine of sorts to a highly personal, refined, and developed aesthetic.

Zambrano’s premier solo exhibition “Interior Atscapes” is destined to be a huge success with many of his works having pre-sold. Stay tuned for follow-up coverage of the gala/opening which will be held at the Burden James Mansion here in town — it promises to be an elegant affair for one of the most elegant young men I know!

For our post here, we were photographed by the brilliant artist and photographer Boris Glamocanin at Zambrano’s studio. In homage to my young artist friend, I’m dressed in a Tom Ford charcoal tweed jacket with brown suede elbow patches, Turnbull and Asser red mini tartan cotton shirt with contrast white color and cuffs, antique Scottish agate cuff links, Ralph Lauren wool tartan tie and pocket square, black watch wool pant by Paul Smith, Tom Ford brown leather belt with rose gold buckle and brown suede lace ups with brown crocodile cap toes, vintage Rolex, and my fragrance is Creed Bois de Portugal.
