I stopped by to have a look at the super chic new Liz O’Brien digs. The new space provides the perfect backdrop for some really spectacular pieces. I totally resonate with O’Brien’s aesthetic and often turn to her when looking for something special.

I’ve been eyeing the super chic “Jansen-style” octagonal dining table (above) in polished gun metal with gold and accents and a smoky glass top by Karl Springer – it seats eight quite easily and would add a sophisticated sensibility to any dining room.

The Frances Elkins loop chairs are another one of my favorites – (I have a set in my own dining room/library) The Tony Duquette inspired rock crystal votive candle holders (below) are truly magical and would make a lovely centerpiece as well as a fabulous holiday gift.

Of note also is the glorious Bagues chandelier (below) in carved wood and painted tole with custom silk shades lined in lavender.

Add to all of this some Fromental wallpaper and a fantastic carpet from Edward Fields or Doris Leslie Blau and one would have quite a nice practically instant dining room!

I’m sporting a black wide wale cotton corduroy jacket by Gucci, a Turnbull and Asser forest green micro check cotton french cuff shirt with contrast white collar, Seaman Schepps silver pearl cuff links with pale blue sapphires, window pane plaid wool pant in charcoals, greens and blues and silver chain link belt both by Gucci,Cobalt suede boots by Pierre Hardy.

A Piece with Provenance

I was so excited to see this campaign style day bed by the French designer Andre Arbus for Gilbert Poillerat in the window of the fabulous Liz Obrien Gallery. I had often marveled at images of this elegant piece in the book, “The World of McMillen,” where it was photographed for a 1954 modern French design exhibition called “Paris in New York.” McMillen used this elegant day bed in their ultra chic living room display, softening its masculine ironwork by draping yards and yards of dotted Swiss muslin from its regal gilt coronet. McMillen was the design house of choice for many years until the legendary pairing of Sister Parish and Albert Hadley with whom it was my great honor to work!

Here I am feeling like a crowned prince, wearing a black wool flannel jacket by Gucci, coral, white, and black silk pocket square by Hermes, mini black and white plaid cotton shirt by Yves Saint Laurent, white shell with multi coloured coral beads cuff links by Seaman Schepps, grey flannel pants and silver chain link belt both by Gucci, black leather tote and black suede with leather trim loafers both by Gucci, Louis Vuitton document folder and Dior sunglasses.

Paul Dupré-Lafon

Paul Dupré-Lafon (1900-1971) was known for his brilliant fusion of ultra fine materials – exotic woods, Hermès leathers, etc. – with a reductive architectural sensibility. His minimalist/luxe environments naturally resonate with more exuberant antique elements, as can be seen in the super chic Tom Ford boutique on Madison Avenue in New York city. Here Ford used architectural elements and furnishings designed by Dupré-Lafon, offsetting and energizing the effect with a few well selected antique pieces – Sublime!

I am pictured at the Liz O’Brien gallery standing in front of an important Dupré-Lafon cabinet in walnut raised on nickle runners. I better find a client with a massive space to accommodate such a monumental piece! O’Brien’s also has a fantastic Karl Springer coffee table covered in brown python and a wonderful round table by Silas Seandel that caught my eye.

I am wearing a grey flannel suit by Gucci, vintage brown silk pocket square, a Tom Ford shirt in pale blue cotton glenn plaid, Seaman Schepps silver pearl and pale blue Sapphire cufflinks, a dusty olive with brown windowpane wool tie by Ralph Lauren, brown leather belt by Hermes and brown suede cap toe shoes by Gucci.
