WIJW – A LOOK BACK

James Andrew at Hicks' Savannah

James Andrew at Hicks’ Savannah

We’ve amassed a pretty epic collection of images here on WIJW over the years, however for one reason or another many of the shots never made it into our final posts. In fact there are quite a few out-takes that we think still have some merit, so today’s post is a bit of a look back to an invitation from India Hicks to, as she put it, “photograph [my] wardrobe” in Harbour Island.

Of course we jumped at the opportunity. On our Bahamian excursion, we had the great fortune to stay at her father’s iconic Windermere Island “Savannah” which despite some recent hurricanes, still exuded the Hicks magic — you may recall that the London Telegraph once described me as an “…updated David Hicks.” Suffice it to say, I’ve always had enormous admiration for the man, and his vision continues to inspire me in my own design work!

Later, the ever-so-chic India Hicks very graciously arranged for us to stay at her beautiful Harbor Island home, Hibiscus Hill, as well, and as you might imagine, we were more than pleased to oblige!

I’m photographed in Hicks’ Savannah living room absorbing some of his bio-chemical psyche and dressed to celebrate this great 20th century master of design. I’m sporting a white linen Gucci Jacket, pale blue Glen plaid cotton French cuff shirt by Tom Ford, Seaman Schepps silver pearl and pale blue sapphire cuff links, shocking pink cotton jean cut Dior pants, yellow ribbon Club Monaco belt, yellow and white silk retro print Charvet pocket square, white leather Gucci loafers, and my fragrance is Royal Water by Creed – Incidentally Creed’s fragrance Royal Water was created for the young house of Windsor, and as chance would have it Prince Charles and Lady Diana spent time at Savannah on their honeymoon in the summer of 1981!

This has been an amazing journey — we’ve met so many fascinating people and experienced so many magical places. It just seems to get better and better.

  3. Bravo! Your life is charmed because of your CHARM!! (just my opinion)!

We were in London (you were not born yet) two weeks before “THE WEDDING” in 1981; Adam’s divine mother took 17 of us on the QE2 (on the upper floor with balconies); (her 3 sons, daughter , spouses and children) to London…we stayed at Claridges,(for 10 days) we got tickets to Wimbleton, (team effort….my niece played there….I supplied to access to the tickets) can you even imagine??

Adam and I with our three girls went about England for some fun places for a week….a trip of a lifetime!
    Those Hick’s!

    Chicer than chic!

I went on a Sotheby’s trip to London…..and we met Allegra and her husband at their house in London……astonishing; and the most darling people……she was just starting her rugs….15 years ago?

We stayed at the nicest hotel……(the Ritz?) I got a written message under my door…..

“Madam; your husband called and wants you to know there are 6 ducks in your pond!”

Can’t you just see it??? You were here!

    Bravo! More from the “library”!!!

  4. ps I have saved that message…..it is on a message board in my dressing room!

Bravo James! Look what a life one can carve with a positive and beautiful attitude……and a wonderful partner!

    My Darling Penelope Bianchi,

It was always my great fantasy to take a transatlantic voyage on the QE2- alas- the era has passed and now ships are like malls at sea.

So happy you were able to experience this!

And- Claridges – my hotel of choice in London!!!

But then again you just get everything right- effortless chic as always!

    Much Love

    JA
