The Windsor’s Commode

I am thoroughly fascinated by the opulent lives the Duke and Duchess of Windsor lived. Decorated by the legendary Maison Jansen, their home in Bois de Boulogne was a dazzling private kingdom and perfect stage for the Windsor’s – a world of precious treasures, sumptuous furnishings, elegant clothes, and exquisite dinner parties.

The Duke and Duchess were known world wide for their taste and style – he for his refined English elegance, and Wallis for her penchant for haute couture and outrageous jewelry. Their legacy continues to inspire me both in my own personal style as well as in my interior design!

Strolling down Madison Avenue I remembered that Delorenzo (one of the most important galleries dealing in 20th century decorative arts) had acquired the famed Syrie Maugham George II style faux marble commode from the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

This fantastic piece, with its demi-lune form, carved lion’s heads, swags of flowers and ribbons, lion-paw feet, and white and green-blue faux marble once graced the entrance hall of the Windsor’s magical villa. Needless to say, I have been dreaming of using it in one of my own interiors.

I am wearing an ivory wide wale corduroy jacket over a plum cashmere turtleneck, plum silk paisley scarf, sandy beige wool pant all by Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent black leather “Windsor” loafers.
