My friend the photographer Matt Dean recently invited me to the Sean Kelly Gallery to meet Director Maureen Bray and to see the extraordinary Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition entitled, “Saints and Sinners,” (marking the 25th anniversary of the landmark Mapplethorpe show, “The Perfect Moment”).

Sean Kelly brings together the most brilliant pairings of Mapplethorpe images including several that have rarely been shown. Kelly created a bold and graphic black and white striped backdrop for the show which fittingly mirrors the theme of light and dark, good and evil, and yes, saints and sinners.

In addition, there is an installation by Slater Bradley “A Point Beyond The Tree,” with intimate pieces related to Bradley’s muse, Alina. Here, he explores themes of longing, loss and unconditional love.

Both the Mapplethorpe and Bradley exhibitions will be ending January 25, 2014 so do make haste if you plan to see these!

Upcoming at the Sean Kelly Gallery is the international debut of the celebrated Frank Thiel’s latest work in which he turns his camera to the massive glacial ice formations in Argentine Patagonia – “Nowhere is a Place by Frank Thiel” (January 31 – March 22, 2014 ). For this series, Thiel captures enormous yet fragile glacial formations with suitably large scale images (we’re told there are some enormous 30ft prints included!). Needless to say we’re pretty excited to see these in person. The opening reception is January 30, from 6-8pm.

While at the Sean Kelly gallery we were treated to a full tour of their 22,000 square foot gallery space – it’s a magnificent museum quality space designed by architect Toshiko Mori to showcase and accommodate their ever-expanding stable of artists. Sean Kelly’s library (which houses a substantial 6000 books) is a masterpiece in itself. The library table, for instance, is made from a single piece of African hardwood. The ceiling light fixture is a commissioned work by artist Jeff Zimmerman inspired by elements of Marcel Duchamp’s iconic “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even.”

We want to thank Maureen Bray for such a glorious gallery visit and of course special thanks to our very talented Matt Dean who captured the space so gloriously.

Exploring the Sean Kelly library, I’m sporting a Tom Ford brown and black wool window pane plaid “Country” jacket, amber cashgora sweater, brown corduroy pants, cognac, cream and purple plaid shirt and amber and brown silk pocket square as well as the glasses, vintage Rolex, Gucci paisley scarf worn as ascot, aubergine suede “Eton” boots by YSL and my fragrance is Creed Vintage Taborome.
