Spanish Night at The Frick

James Andrew and Velazquez's King Philip IV.

Seven hundred and fifty museum goers recently thronged to The Frick in celebration of two openings; The King at War:Velasquez’s Protrait of Philip IV and The Spanish Manner: Drawings from Ribera to Goya — To compliment the evening’s theme, we were treated to the beautiful and romantic strains of the critically acclaimed classical guitarist, Cameron O’Connor, along with insightful lectures and even drawing paper for those inspired to commemorate the moment in charcoal! Being a Frick Collection event, it probably goes without saying that the whole evening was a resounding success.

Velázquez’s King Philip IV (1644) is considered to be one of the artist’s finest portraits, and was acquired by Henry Clay Frick in the early 1900’s for the then staggering sum of $500,000 – the most expensive piece of art purchased for his collection. The painting has been recently returned to The Frick from The Metropolitan Museum, where it was cleaned for the first time in sixty years. So although you may have missed this splendid soirée, it would be well worth your while to visit The Frick to admire the painting in its restored state, and learn a bit more about the painter and the story behind this tour de force work.

Admiring Velazquez’s work, I’m wearing a Tom Ford for Gucci wool nail head tweed suit, teal, white, and black Russian floral print silk shirt and purple silk and wool paisley scarf both by Gucci, Charvet black silk pocket square, Ralph Lauren purple alligator belt with sterling buckle, (not seen – black leather wing tip tasseled loafers by Gucci). My fragrance is Creed Imperial Millesime.

    Dear James,

It is so cool the way you are promoting the Frick. LOVE your rich hippie, boho look here. It reminds me of how I would dress when I was on the grand tour as a younger man. Very comme il faut !

Sounds like a great evening. Just love the Frick – am going to try and make it to these shows. And of course love the suit – purple belt is a great touch!

  9. Stunning! Of course one of my favourite museums ever is the Prado where I love seeing Valasquez’ works. So thanks for posting this. I’m not sure, however, which is the most handsome figure: the one in the painting or the dark-haired gentlemen sporting Tom Ford.
