Paley Park

When I’m in midtown I will often head to Paley Park, a peaceful oasis located on East 53rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues. Designed by the very stylish visionary William Paley and realized by the brilliant landscape architect Robert Zion, every aspect of this 1967 micro or “vest pocket” park was developed and considered in minute detail right down to the nicely priced refreshments one can still purchase there. A handsome 20 foot tall waterfall at the far end of this little city retreat induces virtually instantaneous meditation – refreshing the air, soothing tired eyes, and drowning out the hustle and bustle of our frenetic city. Rows of honey locust and rich ivy covered walls provide a lush green backdrop, and sculptural Bertoia chairs punctuate the shadowy light, providing cool comfort for tired legs. Paley Park is one of those perfect places to rest, regroup, and savor the beauty of the moment.

Captured here at Paley by noted photographer A. C. Scott, I’m thanking the spirit of William Paley for his invaluable gift to New York. Incidentally, this is where the legendary Stork Club once stood – so it is satisfying to know that the space has been treated with such reverence. I’m wearing a cognac pieced suede jacket, a lavender and ivory silk paisley shirt with micro pleated front and 100’s of buttons, mint green cotton pants, python belt with silver double horsehead buckle, saddle leather tasseled loafers, a brown suede and leather satchel and sunglasses all by Gucci.

this oasis is one of my favorite spots. i love how the sound of the waterfall masks the sounds from the street. it is intimate, private spot!
