WHAT IS JAMES WEARING? Rotating Header Image

It has been a dream of mine—and I’m sure I’m not alone in this fantasy—to build a house from the ground up with my favorite architectural elements, and bring to it all of the inspiration I’ve found in my travels.

The new Rizzolli book, One Man’s Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood, is a glorious compendium of just this very thing—a glimpse into the private and enchanted world of Furlow Gatewood as manifest in four houses—along with gardens and out building—he built on his family’s property in bucolic Americus, Georgia.

I first met Gatewood many years ago. I’d walked my beloved whippet Rupert to the ravishing Rosselli boutique. The lovely southern gentleman, Gatewood, shared a mutual appreciation for sighthounds, (as you can see above). Well, you might imagine the ruckus all the pups would create running about!

Of course, hounds are not the only subject of mutual interest! My admiration for the man extends to his whole aesthetic. I’m wild about Gatewood’s sense of scale, his gutsy furniture, his nearly ceiling high doors and windows – all of these elements join to create the most magnificent impression of excitement and glamor.

With his encyclopedic knowledge of antiques, architecture and decoration, the self taught Gatewood creates the most splendid confections, sometimes starting with just one incredible window or doorway he had discovered. Needless to say, there are so many lessons to be learned here. Richly illustrated with photographs by Rodney Collins and Paul Costello, One Man’s Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood is a must-have for designers and dreamers alike! 1. James, studying this marvelous book, as I have done for hours and hours, has filled me with both admiration for this remarkable man, and dismay that in comparison to his houses mine now appears to me to be drab, stuffy, and dull. I long to sweep it all away, paint everything gray and dead white, and start over with a fresher, cleaner look . . . Bravo Mr. Furlow Gatewood!

  2. It was such fun to finally meet you at the party after reading your blog for so long. Like Reggie, I’ve been spending hours reading the book and studying the pictures.

  3. Dean says:

    It’s so you James!
    I love Southern Style…
bein’ from the South and all…

  4. James Andrew says:

    My Darling Reggie,

I can’t wait to see your house!!!

Mr Gatewood is a magician and I found the whole story so inspiring -even in his 90’s he is still busy creating his dream.

    Much Love

  5. Lordy! It is so fun being and “OLD LADY”!!!!!

I met Furlow when he was still at John Rosselli on the River! Have you heard him talk?
(My beloved and adored mother was from Alabama……and so the South is in my DNA)

Furlow has the most beautiful accent……and the most beautiful taste of anyone alive today.

Please; I hope that does not hurt anyone’s feelings……it is just a FACT!!
And he has been here for more years!

This is not the book of the “year”!

It is also complete proof that “books” (printed ones) are not dead…….and never will be!!

This is the decorating book of the “Century”!

In my view! And this actually made me cry many times……(just seeing bits on bloig posts)

This is so beautifully evocative of “home”!!
This man is a loving, caring, brilliant “GENIUS”!!!

I think it is my supreme compliment!

YOWZERS!!! Thank you Bunny for encouraging….thank you all of Furlow’s friends for encouraging!

Most of al; thank you Furlow for sharing with the new people who can learn so much about beauty and preservation from YOU!

    And there is no substitute!

    Brilliant and Bravo!
