Tented “Little Club” dining pavilion at Lyford Cay

We are so excited to be flying down for the second annual Lyford Cay Design Weekend!

As guests of our exquisite friend, the impossibly chic John Fondas, we’re sure to have a wonderful time. We’ll be catching up with friends, doing house tours, attending a few lectures, and of course going to some fab dinner parties—I’m particularly excited to be meeting legendary photographer Bruce Weber who’ll be a guest speaker there!

Also my gorgeous friend, Montana Timchula, is scouting out ravishing locations and backdrops for some epic WIJW pictorials as well. Do stay tuned.

Will leave you with an image (above) of the classic “Little Club” tented dining room pavilion to prime you for our forthcoming pics!

Divine Mr. Weber…I had the blessing to meet him and HIS CREW, a few years ago here at my home. He did a shoot, for Lauren – brought the requisite vintage Jag, the beautiful peeps and props! Most of all, animals so beloved by him…more so a burro named Rosie! On my balustraded terrace languished a bejeweled and bedecked beauty…and peering thru my windows into the main room of our Pavilion San Rafael, was Rosie. A serenity to her gaze washed over the mayhem outside which fell away blurring into a Midsummers Night haze.

I shall forever remember his elegance of a TRUE heart when giving all a inside tour, all the while holding my little boy Cavalier King Charles, Rumsey, who was elderly and not well but MAJORLY Handsome beyond belief. Bruce said how he felt the Love I bestowed upon my little boy, all the while we were being chronicled ala Warhol by one with recorder and another with camera. I always wanted the photo of Rosie on my terrace…so Surreal and sublime…a distant memory of a reclusive person hosting a famous entourage! Wonder if he even remembers….I do!

  2. My dear James,
How to inspire envy in those of us currently languishing in colder, damper climates…
Enjoy your time, but do remember we residents of the the not-so-temperate climes.

    My Dear Regina,

What a sublime story! I am so very excited to meet Mr Weber and hear him speak.

I would love to see the photos he took of your home!

Have you seen his book “A House Is Not A Home” ? A tremendous tome!

Mr Weber seems to be quite the animal lover , something I suppose we all have in common – today marks the 4 year anniversary of the passing of my beloved whippet- Rupert.

It would be so fab for you to have a copy of the photograph of “Rosie” – a wonderful way to celebrate a special moment.

    Happiest Wishes for 2014

    Cheers

Sorry Penny…Bruce Weber photographed our present home PAVILION SAN RAFAEL – you’ve been here. The home I bought years ago from you which led you to Montecito was on San Rafael…perhaps your thinking of when Victoria Pearson photographed that house for the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog…she is wonderful and featured the Living Room & Dining rooms with my little Luigi, in his 18thC birdcage.

  22. Danny says:

    Oh James,

    Greetings from Firenze!
Reading the comments on this post is really like a scenario for a Mapp and Lucia novel in the email age! A Tennis Volley of mistaken times, beautiful places and people with European Titles who went to high school rather than lycées. Magnificent! (As is your blue suit!)

  23. La Contessa says:

    DANNY!
DOVE ABITA A FIRENZE?Or are you just visiting?I lived there 23 years ago above BAGNO A RIPOLI……in SAN DONATO IN COLLINA………high on a hill top.I hope your enjoying every day……….it was very hard for me to move back to the STATES after spending three years roaming the streets and hill towns.Even though I live close to SAN FRANCISCO I left my heart in FIRENZE!

  24. This column represents the “small beach” story I learned from a “Grande Dame” in New Orleans……15 years ago!

    “Small Beach” story!’!!!!

SERIOUSLY; THIS IS THE MOST ASTONISHING THING! YIKES! (I KNOW NOT TO CAPITALIZE….IT IS SHOUTING! BUT IT HURTS NO ONES EARS…..AND I MEAN TO SHOUT!!!!!

This involves James, Regina, me, and la Contessa. It is intertwined!

    Here we go!

I saw my favorite house in Pasadena in 1960! (I was 13 and vowed to “live there someday”!!)

I vowed to live in it some day to my mother…who told me it was the “prettiest house in Pasadena” Yes!!

My husband and I bought out of probate in 1986! I HAD DREAMED OF IT FOR 26 YEARS! I WAS 39! I had my 40th birthday party in my favorite house! We all adored it! (3 girls and husband!)

In 1998; we decided to move to Montecito……we decided to move on a Saturday……we did not tell anyone; (it had been our goal since 1978 to end up in Montecito…..where we spent our honeymoon!)

    the time was right…..1998!
Our house was on a “Pasadena Heritage ” tour on a Sunday…..and Monday I drove out the driveway to look at houses in Montecito!
As I drove out the driveway; Adam answered the phone; it was Regina! (who commented on this post WIJW!)

“I know your house isn’t for sale; but I fell in love with it yesterday; and we just sold our house to Madonna”!! (no one could make this up! )
She and her very smart husband Bruce bought it by Friday!) And they LOVED IT!

Genius Regina bought it from us on our way to Montecito.. I knew this lady loved this house! I loved that it was treasured!

She lived in it for a few years……then she and her husband bought the other most beautiful house in Pasadena!

The “pavillon” (both of them are pavillons) nearby! I think very similar architecture! Both copies of 18th century “pavilions” in France!
(she is, of course , correct: Bruce Weber shot the photos in her second “pavilion” her next house! (she was so kind to say I did remember another photoshoot in my old house…….these houses are similar in many ways……and I adore them both….)!!

Regina has the best taste…..and knows more about everything decorative than anyone.

How funny and interesting…..and wonderful that we are all “followers and friends” of “What Is James Wearing?”

And two of our daughters belonged to Lyford Cay Club ; and I spent my 49th or 48th birthday (a complete surprise!) with all 3 girls and their husbands……..what an elegant and lovely place!

    Now there are 7 grandchildren!

It remains a lovely island of good taste; really necessary dress requirements……..(alas…..they disappear…so so sad)

A complete island of elegance!! A miracle; really!

    Bravo!!!

And we all come together…….along with La Contessa (whose Aunt owned my very favorite house in all of MOntecito…….”Constancia” The stunning South African colonial house that was almost lost……(to being torn down!! and replaced by a McMansion) rescued by some lovely people whose daughter goes to school with my granddaughter!
At Thacher! a boarding school in Ojai nearby!

Regina knows that house; too! (and everything in it!!!) (Constancia)!

It is completely astonishing to me that we can all know each other…..and our houses and things we cherish…….through the “internet”!!!

    Isn’t life completely astonishing??
    I sure think so!
All wonderful people braided together into my favorite stories. It is amazing to see all of this!

    Bravo everyone!

    WHEW!!!

Regina knows that house; too! (and everything in it!!!)

It is completely astonishing to me that we can all know each other…..and our houses and things we cherish…….through the “internet”!!!

    Isn’t life completely astonishing??
    I sure think so!

  25. PS since my comment was so long; you can probably skip writing a column for awhile!

    so sorry!

    Good Lord!!

  26. Danny says:

    La Contessa,

    Piacere!

Thank you all for a most scintillating conversation, and to James for facilitating it all on this forum.

I’m here for work now, but have had a flat for a time central on via dei serraglia, also at the beautiful Via di San Leonardo, next to Belvedere…. Beautiful city, beautiful culture, beautiful food, carefully turned out inhabitants and beautiful weather (though not today)…. Still, it ain’t got what SF got! And that’s the exciting multicultural mix!

    D

  27. La Contessa says:

DANNY…………..I know VIA DEI SERRAGLIA,cannot place the altra strada but of course, I know BELVEDERE.I suppose SAN FRANCISCO has a bigger mix………..but FIRENZE has older and more bellisima buildings!Lucky you for getting to experience all of that.
Do you know about the MARTINI & ROSSI VILLA with its 365 windows? As in the VERMOUTH people.Continue past SAN DONATO on Via Roma and you will see it on the left. When I lived up there noone lived there! You could say I HAD A DREAM just like PENELOPE, but my time is running out!I turn 54 in July and see NO WAY THAT WILL HAPPEN!
You seize your time there and do walk up to SAN MINIATO AL MONTE for me as I was married there up the stone stairs to the high alter where the monks would have chanted.ALHORA,now that you know more about me please bevi un cappuccino per me………..VA BENE??!!!
    PENELOPE……….Did REGINA know my aunt?

  28. Regina says:

Thank you James & Penny…I’m not at all surprised by the SMALL WORLD aspect – Life is Energy manifest and those who radiate Beauty, collide in harmony!

Let our Prisms for Life remain open channels of Beauty!

  29. James Andrew says:

    Darling Penelope,

I just adore ALL your stories!!!

Thank You for sharing ALL of this wonderful Stuff!

    Love and Light

    JA

  30. James Andrew says:

    My Dear Regina,

So happy to have you as a part of all of this!

I can’t wait to see your home!

Life is indeed energy manifest- like attracts like – so no wonder kindred spirits have united here on WIJW?

You are a poet Regina and Thanks for sharing!

    All my best,
