More Exotic Elegance

Continuing our theme of exotic elegance! I am forever fascinated with Ottoman, Moroccan, and Syrian-style inlaid furniture, and especially mother of pearl inlay. Glimmering mother of pearl lends such an irresistible hint of dreamy escape, and I’m thrilled to be utilizing several pieces for Scott McBee’s modernist “Turquerie” of a bedroom: a Syrian Art Deco inlaid table that will be placed between two club chairs, a marvelous mother of pearl inlaid mirror over a campaign chest of drawers and a pair of small mother of pearl inlaid chests of drawers as bedside tables.

This sort of Ottoman opulence works quite brilliantly in tropical environments as well. In fact you’ll often find several pieces of inlaid mother of pearl or bone furniture in my Florida projects—its cooling shimmer and hard finish makes it well suited to those warmer climes.

I’m pictured shopping for more mother of pearl. I am rather smitten by this superb chest of drawers which will be perfect for a project in Florida. I am sporting a Tom Ford mango silk “Spencer” jacket, pale blue cotton woven mini herringbone shirt, Tom Ford era Gucci silk tie, Charvet Paris pale blue silk retro print pocket square, Paul Smith pale grey wool pant, pearl and pale blue sapphire cuff links, vintage Rolex, Ralph Lauren black alligator belt with sterling buckle, Tom Ford era Gucci sunglasses and black leather tasseled loafers, my fragrance is Creed Original Cologne.

    James,

I so agree with all that you say. Those pieces will do doubt escalate in value as the decades go by too. You look more chic than I ever could have thought possible! Of course, I adore it when you wax poetic about decorating and how it relates to escapism…and the pursuit of a higher plane of “existence”. Now that mid town Manhattan is becoming even more of a pit stop for international billionaires, (and the mere multimillionaires) I am so sure that you’ll be landing some (more) truly carte blanche projects!
