With the conclusion of fashion week there were some pretty amazing parties. One of the highlights for me was the party hosted by Mary J. Blige at the uber chic New York Gucci flagship store on 5th Avenue to benefit FFAWN (Foundation For the Advancement of Women Now) – a cause dedicated to helping and inspiring women to gain the confidence and skills they need to reach their individual potential.

I was really struck by Blige’s own story of abuse as a child growing up in the projects, struggles with drugs, alcohol and abusive relationships, and her subsequent rise despite seemingly insurmountable odds. Through her music, Blige continues to touch a huge audience with an authentic and inspirational message encouraging personal responsibility and self acceptance on the way toward reclaiming one’s power and dignity.

I feel a personal affinity for Blige having grown up in an abusive situation myself – my personal struggle happened in the form of a parent who had such radical religious beliefs that there was simply no place for me as I was. I’m sure there are many stories like this within the WIJW readership, so I thought to share Blige’s positive and uplifting message! Whatever the obstacle, with personal initiative and acceptance one can absolutely overcome!

Here at Gucci I’m celebrating Mary J.’s brilliance, I’m wearing my 80’s glam turquoise, purple and black sprayed wash leather jacket by Gucci, Turnbull and Asser purple cotton shirt with contrast white collar and French cuffs, Seaman Schepps precious turquoise cufflinks, black and white silk/cotton mini hounds tooth pants, silver chain link belt, black, white and silver leather loafers all by Gucci.
