Herculaneum

With its temperate climate and stunning views it’s easy to see why the Amalfi coast has been a luxury destination for millennia – as the purported story goes in fact the place was hugely endorsed by Hercules (son of Zeus) himself when he founded Herculaneum – in a strange bit of irony the place was decimated by Mount Vesuvius which is said to have also been sacred to Hercules. Well, the gods do work in mysterious ways! In any case, Herculaneum is just forty short minutes from Sorrento, so if you are curious to see how the really wealthy Roman’s lived (apparently the Herculanians were even richer than residents of Pompeii) then a trip here is a must. After a gorgeous breakfast at the Parco dei Principi we had a car collect us and whisk us off to this fascinating excavation site.

It’s quite incredible to see the frescoes and mosaics quite intact.

I’m sure that inspiration from my visit will work its way into future WIJW projects. Certainly it has inspired countless architects – in fact the J Paul Getty museum in Malibu owes much to Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum.

Playing the explorer (top) I’m dressed in a navy gingham shirt with an outrageous amount of pockets by Gucci, “Cave Beach” khaki shorts by Lindeberg, Gucci sandals and sunglasses, Creed Bois de Cedrat to keep me feeling fresh.

    James,

What a fascinating story – the past is such an inspiration for today. I always enjoy reading WIJW and the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) over morning coffee… Bravo !

What a great outfit, James! It’s very simple, and a manifest that dressing up is not always the answer.

I was in the region a few years back, but unfortunately I missed Herculaneum. But indeed, to judge from the pictures it seems a place to visit for sure!
