Nicky Haslam’s Folly De Grandeur: Romance and Revival in an English Country House

John Fowler along with Nancy Lancaster are certainly to be credited for redefining the English Country House look for the 20th century. I’ve had a particularly longstanding fascination with Fowler’s country home design, the Hunting Lodge, near Odiham in Hampshire England. This romantic folly gave Fowler the opportunity to indulge his most outrageous decorating and gardening fantasies (making it quite irresistible to yours truly!).

Needless to say, when I was presented with the opportunity to visit the Hunting Lodge some years ago, I was on the next flight to the UK! As fortune would have it, my dear friend, London based textile designer Peter Westcott, is great friends with the legendary interior designer Nicky Haslam who happens to be the current resident there. A weekend invitation to Haslam’s home provided me with the most divine opportunity to explore every detail of the property, and to spend some thoroughly enjoyable time listening to a few of Haslam’s remarkable stories.

Haslam, as you know, is designer to royalty and rock stars. For the Hunting Lodge, he pays homage to Fowler and the house’s rich history while bringing his own brand of “…exhilarating chic…[and] a touch of opulence.” This is a house dedicated to the art of living beautifully, comfortably, and well!
