CHRISTIAN FUCHS: FAMILY TREE

As you may recall from a recent WIJW post, the wildly talented Peruvian based artist, Christian Fuchs, recently visited New York City. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him and be graced by his lens. See the very cool photo above!

Of course, he has many projects in the works besides mugging with yours truly! Of particular note is Fuchs’ most recent project in which he explores his family history. Fuchs tells us of a childhood marveling at the many family portraits and photographs he was given to look at. With a rather notable collection like his (this is no run-of-the-mill family to be certain, and there are literally reams of daydreamy images in his family archives), it isn’t surprising that what started as curiosity would later became an obsession. Here the artist has taken immersive (read:extreme!) measures to experience just who his ancestors were. Employing skilled tailors, make-up artists and hair stylists, and of course his own highly refined sense of color and mood, Fuchs makes the past present through a series of extraordinary photographic self portraits.

“Our past is very relevant to who we are. There are so many stories of all those who lived before us that still affect us in our current lives. We inherit characteristics, personalities, behavioral patterns and so on that repeat through generations,” notes Fuchs. He goes on to quote the famous Chilean writer Alejandro Jodorowsky:

“The tree is alive within me. I am the tree. I am all my family”

For today’s image (top) Fuchs seamlessly melds a self portrait together with a separate photograph he took of me. I am sporting a Gucci charcoal tweed Tyrolean style jacket and wool check pants, Turnbull and Asser forest green mini check shirt with contrast white collar and cuffs, dark green cashmere tie by Borrelli, Ralph Lauren black alligator belt with sterling buckle, antique Scottish agate cuff links, vintage Rolex, Pierre Hardy royal suede boots with black trim, Tom Ford Marco sunglasses and my fragrance is Creed Royal Oud.
