Channeling Coco

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.
– Coco Chanel

This is one of my favorites from Coco Chanel. In my creative work it helps to be aware of the major figures in fashion and design that have gone before, and I turn to their thoughts quite frequently to glean valuable insight and inspiration. Perhaps what appeals to me most in Chanel’s proclamation here, is the idea that there are no lines drawn, no boundaries in the expression of style – it’s happening all the time in every moment, everywhere.

Recently on my way to see a client, a young photographer from Germany stopped me on the street, asking to take my photo for a German publication, because he felt that I “…epitomized New York high style…” While I lay no claim to this praise, I was quite flattered – after all, one does like to be appreciated for one’s efforts, and unsolicited appreciation from a stranger is a pretty nice thing! Needless to say I happily conceded to mug for a quick impromptu picture, and I’m including it here – no staging or plan – just a small slice of life in the city – I thought there was a hint of Coco in the spirit of this.

Yes! Absolutely. There is something important about being aware of the moment, and putting some effort into dressing well. There is a lot of dignity in that, and I think Chanel knew that best.

Good taste in ‘timepieces’ as well as ‘threads’…..
