On our recent trip to Miami, my dear friend, the super chic hotelier Brian Gorman, and I co-hosted a fabulous cocktail fete at his ultra glam Lords South Beach Cha Cha Rooster Bar. I had the great pleasure to connect with old friends as well as some fabulous local WIJW fans over drinks—do try the Cha Cha’s mojitos when you go, they’re simply superb! While there we took the opportunity to chat with the brilliant Gorman about his latest venture, Lords South Beach Hotel.

WIJW: What do you mean when you say Lords is “an appropriately orientated hotel?
BG: The hotel is a place for all to feel comfortable, relax and have a good time. It means you don’t have to be something for us; we will be something for you.

WIJW: What were some of your core design concepts when creating Lords?
BG: We wanted the hotel to encourage people to have fun and for this to be communicated in the spirit of the design. The décor is deliberately playful with bold colors, cabana stripes, and quirky details throughout – such as our lobby polar bear and the vintage photos in our restaurant of the old ladies of Miami Beach. We liked the idea of mixing-in these unexpected touches.

WIJW: I also liked what you said about bringing your own cool to a place – can you elaborate on that? You had likened the idea of a studio 54 kind of place where people felt free to be themselves- gay – straight – etc.
BG: Being different, being happy, being comfortable – this is cool. It’s the people that make a place cool and we like to celebrate their differences. That said, we do seem to have an unusually high demographic of handsome people hanging out by the pool and eating in the restaurant! (Laughs).

WIJW: What are some of your aspirations and fantasies as a hotelier?
BG: To continue creating environments where people enjoy spending time and feel part of a community. We believe the Lords brand could work in many cities throughout the country and we are actively exploring these opportunities.

WIJW: I’m sure it would please our WIJW audience if you’de tell us a bit about what you are wearing.
BG: Jeans, always Prada. Jacket and tie, YSL. Shirt, Charvet. Shoes Louis Vuitton.

I’ve been admiring this exceptionally handsome secretaire – it’s furniture like this that brings me to Evergreen Antiques again and again. I’m drawn to Scandinavian and Northern European design for its confluence of sublime proportion, understated elegance, and utility. The superlative work pictured here is the perfect example – Incredibly versatile, this fall-front piece, with its rich mahogany finish and brass fittings simply exudes luxury and will go equally well in an upscale traditional interior as well as in an opulent contemporary setting.

Determining where I might best use this lovely piece I’m wearing a beige silk, wool and cotton jacket by Gucci, Tom Ford lavender end on end cotton shirt with contrast white collar, Tom Ford magenta and white silk pocket square, Dior shocking pink jean cut pants, Gucci python belt with silver double horsehead buckle, Gucci saddle leather tassled loafers, Louis Vuitton document folder and sunglasses by Tom Ford.

Tucker Robbins has managed to create the perfect combination of being “Green” and Chic. Working with various tribal craftsmen from around the globe and using traditional methods of manufacture, all of the contemporary furnishings he creates are made from reclaimed or recycled materials. My dear friend and mentor Albert Hadley recognized Robbins’ talent early on and it was at Hadley’s urging that Robbins originally moved from Connecticut to set up shop in Manhattan. Needless to say, Hadley has used Robbins’ work in many of his interior projects and has done a great deal to promote it to the NYC decorating community. I’m passionate as well about Robbins’ beautiful eco-conscious pieces and use them whenever I have the right project.

Here at Tucker Robbins’ Manhattan showroom seated on the “Albert” bench I am wearing a white leather jacket with black saddle trim by Gucci, (my apologies if anyone has tired of seeing me wear this piece but the window of opportunity to wear it is so small I have to enjoy it as often as I can), plum feather weight cashmere turtle neck sweater also by Gucci, black skinny jeans by Diesel, Louis Vuitton document folder and Gucci “playboy” loafers in black python.

When I can’t find the right antique for a client or when I need a matching companion to a piece, I turn to a select group of artisans like those at the Italian company Pozzoli represented at the Roubini showroom in New York City. They have been in business for over 100 years making fantastic reproductions of period antiques using traditional 18th century methods.

I am especially fond of this wonderful console – with its chalky white finish, carved palm leaf detail, lions paw feet with and antiqued marble top, it would be hard pressed to tell this from an antique original. I love this side chair as well – a Louis XVI style chair that has been modified to give it a more luxurious modernist feel. You may see a pair of these consoles in one of my upcoming interiors and perhaps a few of these chairs around a dining table.

I am wearing a mix of black and brown – black cashmere topcoat by Gucci, a heavy knit brown wool sweater with button front and epalets, Russian floral print brown and black silk/cotton shirt by Gucci, Michael Kors cashmere thermal weave undershirt, black wool flannel pant by Gucci, brown leather “Chelsea” boots by Gucci, brown suede gloves by Sermoneta and a document folder by Louis Vuitton.
