Bespoke: The Men’s Style of Savile Row

I think I’m safe in saying that most well dressed men ultimately aspire to have their clothing custom made in London by one of the legendary Savile Row tailors. After all, they’ve been dressing the most elegant and sophisticated men, aristocrats and royalty, since the 1700’s, and have seen more than their share of rock stars in the last few decades as well! Savile Row’s significance to men’s fashion cannot be overstated – as Tom Ford, in his forward for the new book Bespoke: The Men’s Style of Savile Row by James Sherwood, puts it; “Savile Row tailoring set the standard for the way the stylish 20th-century man dressed. This English style, in fact, became the international style for well-dressed men all over the world, and this influence has not waned even in today’s more casual world.”

In his generously illustrated Rizzoli book, Sherwood shares the remarkable history of Savile Row — its old guard as well as the new establishment of tailors — and includes many beautiful photos of iconic Savile Row patrons, as well as a comprehensive sampling of fineries produced throughout history.

This delicious new book has me seriously excited to go on a trip to London to do a major exploration. My current favorites will simply have to make room for some of the hand crafted creations I’m sure to find!

So you must excuse me as I’m off to telephone Virgin Airlines and Claridges to sort out my itinerary!

    James,

Great Book ! I do remember vividly seeing the elegant statements from Anderson and Sheppard… they give a gent lots of time to pay his bill, almost as if, one so clever could look the part first, and then get the money to pay for it ! Since so many of the aristos in the U.K are house poor, this totally makes sense. I love the politesse and gentility of it, like a private mens club.

If you are visiting London and heading to Saville Row you should meet with a friend of mine, Frederik Willems. He is the head of design at Gieves & Hawkes. I wove a collection of silk scarves for them to use when showing the A/W 2010 collection in Feb of this year. Their suits are just beautiful… I think that you and he should meet!

  10. I’m now returning the suit I just bought. Thanks alot James. LOL

Hello James thank you for your sartorial updates – whilst in London you must also visit Alfred’s at Bourdon House, an exclusive members Club formerly the private residence of The Duke of Westminster. It was here that Coco Chanel met many of the Dukes friends and family— and on the same street that she opened her first boutique in London.

Bing a man of impecable taste you will really appreciate the interior which has been beautifully restored to its former glory. This Queen Anne gem still stands on Davies Street – the only free standing building in Mayfair – so your tasseled loafers are only a skip and a jump away from Claridge’s – and if your tassels are tired then the club can send the Bentley to pick you up.

Alfred’s also features an on suite bespoke tailor and all the accessories one could desire, including a spa, barber, walk in humidor and a private cinema, with seating designed by David Linley.

Let me know when you’re in London, I hope you will be my guest…

    Marcus.

  13. James Andrew says:

    Marcus,

Thank You for your fantastic message!

I have chatted with someone from Dunhill actually and was told about this club, apparently they hope to do one here in NYC as well.

I would be honored to be your guest!

I will keep you posted about my dates to travel to London once I get my schedule sorted.

Cheers and many thanks for all your wonderful support and feedback!
