ALEXA HAMPTON AT KIPS BAY SHOW HOUSE 2014

It was rather sublime to spend time recently with the stunning and super chic Alexa Hampton in her marvelous “Mongiardino” inspired room at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House held in the magnificent McKim, Mead and White, Villard House.

A showhouse should be the most perfect and purest form of a designer’s expression. Designing a show house is one of those fairly rare opportunities for a designer to be completely and utterly autocratic, and boy are we happy to see Hampton’s ravishing work totally ‘uncut’ as it were. Much of her inspiration came from her love of orientalist paintings as well as a trip she made (Hampton was in her teens) with her father to Sevilla. It was the glorious tile work at Casa de Pilatos that left the most lasting impression on Hampton, an impression that eventually led to the canvas wallpaper pattern she and artist Chuck Fisher created for her Kips Bay showing. It’s absolutely integral to the tone and mood of the room, in fact she used it as a starting point to establish a complete palette of purples, pinks, greens and indigos.

Hampton had all the woodwork painted and glazed in what she calls “grumpy green,” a strange and gorgeous shade that takes away any possibility of the room becoming saccharine in any way. The use of modern art and photography as well as the apple matting on the floor provide an impossibly chic freshness to the room—making it feel today—it’s all very inviting.

Hampton and I discussed at great length her many influences—the “Mongiardino” zeitgeist we are both currently vibing with, our mutual love of turqueries and orientalist painting, about her channeling Lee Radziwill as captured by Cecil Beaton in her London drawing room, the luxurious layering of a well curated room, and many and all things wonderful. There IS a collective consciousness at work in design, certainly!

All this being said, we at WIJW ask, no, we command that you go and see Hampton’s room at Kips Bay—perhaps you’ll even get a photo opp with La Divina!

Captured by Scott McBee, the delicious Alexa Hampton is looking rather like a young Catherine Deneuve. We simply love her seemingly effortlessly chic in kaftan and jewels for our photo. To complement the genius of Alexa Hampton and her most ravishing room, I’m sporting a lavender Tom Ford lilac rose silk wool linen melange twill “Snowdon” suit, white cotton shirt, brown leather tasseled loafers and chartreuse silk pocket square, antique moon stone cuff links, pale olive silk scarf from Paul Smith, vintage Rolex, and my fragrance is Creed Original Cologne.
