A WEEKEND WITH THE VANDERBILTS

James Andrew - Eagle's Nest

James Andrew – Eagle’s Nest

As I mentioned a few posts ago, my career as a professional house guest has reached all time heights with fabulous invitations from a multitude of super chic friends. There are occasional gaps in this fairly steady stream of invitations, though, so we decided to do the next best thing this weekend: I present here a fantasy weekend invitation as guests at the Eagle’s Nest, William K Vanderbilt II’s grand Long Island mansion. Scott McBee was keen to discover the collection of yacht models that were on exhibit — Vanderbilt was a legendary sailor and yachtsman, and had a boat house and wharf built here to accommodate his ever growing passion — and I of course jumped at the opportunity to get a glimpse of this palatial Spanish revival Mediterranean-style house.

Twenty five years in the making, Vanderbilt’s home began as a modest bachelor’s retreat located just beyond the legendary concentration of Gold Coast estates that were closer to NYC. Vanderbilt appointed Warren and Wetmore, famed designers of Grand Central Station, to create his Eagle’s Nest — nothing but the best W.V.! Needless to say, it’s a magnificent estate and well worth a visit. I always find these classic homes so rich with inspiration — and of course I take note of the details in hopes of one day utilizing them to create something rather sublime for my clients (or myself!).

McBee captured me on a stroll around the property studying every detail and dreaming about a weekend stay — (freshly shaven) I’m sporting a Ralph Lauren cream cotton cable knit shawl collared sweater, Gucci pink and claret cashmere rugby shirt, Tom Ford cobalt cotton pants, JKP woven white cotton belt, Ralph Lauren madras plaid espadrilles, Tom Ford “Dimitry” sunglasses, and my fragrance is Tom Ford “Neroli Portofino.”

I understand it’s in danger of closing or being sold due to lack of funds from the local community who were gifted this beautiful legendary estate of Spanish influence perhaps gained by his mother, Alva – Casa Alva, in Palm Beach and his brother Harold’s Villa di Venezia in Manalapan. One can imagine his beautiful yacht the ALVA docked outside, ready for his next journey…did you ses the beautiful photo album of the Yacht at the Doyle auction? Perhaps Mr. McBee was the one who took it home.

Like John Singer Sargent, the beard was elegant and stylish on you…took you to another level of Beauty!

Andrew you would be the perfect houseguest at this Vanderbilt Estate! I do hope it will be kept in grand condition and not close; as so many other historic homes have fallen victim due to funding.

    My Dear Regina,

    Thank You for your comment.

Now I did not hear they were having financial issues – so sorry to hear.

    Such an incredible property.

Mr McB would love to get his hands on that album. There were several models of Vanderbilt’s yachts on display which made him quite happy. Soon to be portraits.

What a wonderful comparison me and Sargeant- I love that! Yes needed a change – but perhaps the beard will come back.

    Cheers and Many Thanks

    My Dear La Contessa,

Yes Mr McB likes both – but I sense he likes clean shaven best.

Oddly this place seems like it would be more at home in Montecito or Beverly Hills.

Stunning architecture and yes very Italian /Mediterranean.

    Much Love

Doyle’s, Sale #13BP01-Lot 49, April 23, 2013 photo album – should’ve bought it for its beauty alone. Perhaps McB can track thru Doyle’s with an offer…it works sometimes, it may even be with a book dealer near you! Good luck.

  13. James Andrew says:

    Darling Regina,

Thank You! Will try and find this for Mr McB!!!

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

    Cheers
